First Look: The Pros & Cons

Wondering if you should have a first look? Read through our Pros & Cons!

So, what is a first look? A “first look” is a modern trend where a couple sees each other before their ceremony on their wedding day. It is an intimate version of a ‘big reveal’ and creates a private moment for the couple. If you’re on the fence about whether or not you want a first look, read through our pros and cons so you can make an informed decision.

The Pros

Aside from this being a wonderful moment for you both to privately share, you will have more time and control over the photos. If you’re scheduling in a first look, there's no reason not to schedule your portraits, wedding party photos, and even some family shots. Getting these photos out of the way will allow for a more relaxed timeline and more time with your guests while still getting ALL of the photos you could imagine!

You will look your best! By taking these photos first thing, your attire, hair, and makeup will be fresh for photos. Since this is an emotional moment, you will also have enough time to freshen up from any tears!

Last but certainly not least, you get a quiet moment to be together. Although you will have a photographer and possibly a videographer there to capture this moment, this is one of the only “breaks” you get to share alone with your partner on your big day. Many couples say that it helps calm their nerves and get all of their pre-wedding jitters out!

The Cons

The tradition! If you choose a first look it can take away from that big moment when you first walk down the aisle. The social significance of ‘not seeing your bride before the ceremony’ and the notion of “bad luck” are a big reason many couples void a first look.

Although getting to spend more time with your family and friends is great, you will need to start your day earlier to get all of your photos in before the ceremony. This means waking up earlier and being in your wedding attire longer. With that comes the dirt, it is practically impossible to keep your dress clean while taking photos, especially in outdoor locations.

There are lots of benefits when it comes to having a first look but if your gut is telling you to wait until the aisle then listen to it!

The main thing you need to remember when deciding if you're going to have a first look or not is that it is your choice. Don’t think about what family and friends will think, don’t worry about the schedule. A good planner and photographer will find a way to make your timeline work regardless of your decision.
