How To Create Your Wedding Photography Shot List

Prioritize your pics to capture all the important moments!

After months of wedding planning, you’ll want to capture all the beautiful memories, a wedding photography shot list is the best way to make that happen. This list ensures that you get all of the photos you’ve imagined but also helps your planner and photographer plan accordingly.

There are a few categories that go into your wedding photography shot list: Details, Getting Ready, Pre-Ceremony, Ceremony, Portraits, and Reception. Most photographers have their own list of photos they regularly take throughout a wedding day but if there is a specific accessory you want captured, or champagne popping photo be sure to write it down and provide an inspiration photo or two.

The easiest way to begin putting together a list for family and wedding party portraits is to list out all of your family members and all wedding party members. Once you have this list, you can then write out every photo combination you want. This list will be used for pre-ceremony photos and portraits. If you have guests that aren’t in your immediate family or wedding party that you want a photo with, write down a list of photo combinations to capture during your reception.

For schedule-building, you may have a list of the major moments that you want captured or traditional wedding elements that you are choosing not to include. If you don’t want a cake-cutting photo but are hoping for a first look with your dad, write it all down.

Depending on the size of your wedding and how many photos you want, this list may be long. Try your best to prioritize and discuss what photos are most important to you with your photographer.

Tip // If you are hoping to have your wedding photos published let your photographer know. There are certain detail shots that may not be important to you, but many publications will look for.
